Devon's Book Reviews
I am going to post reviews of books I read. I am kind of a slow reader so it may seem that I do not post often. I will try to give a spoiler free review and I will try to be as objective as possible. Hope you enjoy and find them helpful.

Continuing "The Thirteenth Tale"

Started "The Thirteenth Tale"
I started The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and it was not what I was expecting. The writing in this book is amazing. I love the words she uses and the flow of the story. I was hooked at page one and its difficult to put down. I absolutely love it so far and I've only read the first 80 pages so far.
So far the book is about a young woman who is mysteriously requested by an old woman who is a famous author who wants to have her biography written. The young woman doesn't understand why but she decides to go and get this author's life story. The author is an interesting woman who seems to have a knack for pin pointing peoples reactions and thoughts. People like that always gave me the creeps, and this character does as well. But I won't say much more because like I said I'm only 80 pages in. But it is a very interesting story so far and the writing is just flawless. I love this author's writing. I can't wait to read more! Happy reading everyone :)

"Dept. of Reproductive Management" by Kelly A. Wilson, my final thoughts
I have finished Dept. of Reproductive Management by Kelly A. Wilson and it was a good read. It was a very quick read and easy. Chapters are fairly short. The book is only a little over 300 pages so it's not very long. I just took my time with it so it took a little longer that it probably should have. A
quick reader could probably finish this book in nearly one sitting.
Anyways, to the basic summary. In this distopia, reproduction is heavily regulated. You have to go through a selection process and if you are approved you are able to have children. But those who don't get approved have their children taken away and are put to jail. The illegal children are sent to re-education centers, which are like orphanages, but way more strict and when they turn eighteen they either go off to college or are sent to become Remos, who are the officers who enforce this reproduction law. The story follows a 16 year old girl named Maggie and her brother Ryker and a young man who helps them get what they are looking for named Wick (love his name btw). And the story is about their journey getting past Remos and getting a woman's DNA that they need to try and bring down the system of the DRM.
Like I said, I did enjoy this book. It was a fun, fast read. I didn't like the ending though. I felt the book could have gone for another 50 pages to wrap things up and it would have been perfect. Unless the author is planning on a sequel, then it's not as bad of an ending. But if there isn't going to be a sequel the ending was totally lame and needed to be extended even maybe by one or two chapters. But my opinion depends if there will be a sequel or not and I haven't really looked into it quite yet.
One small thing that kind of bothered me was that there were several spelling mistakes. Early in the book it wasn't too bad; they were fairly sparse. But the last third of the novel I started noticing them more frequently and they were ones that should have been caught. I can deal with a few missed, but there seemed to be quite a few near the end and it kind of bothered me.
What i loved about this book was that this kind of thing is not that crazy of an idea. Honestly, I could see some country try to do this to regulate the population or to try and prevent child abuse and starvation, which are the reasons why this program started in the first place but then things started getting out of hand. I think that is why I loved it so much, because it's not a completely foreign idea. It's something that could really happen, and it's kind of scarey, but those also make the best books. Because they are right on the line of impossible and possible, and I think Kelly A. Wilson did a good job of portraying that in this novel.
I am going to rate this novel a 4/5 on goodreads.com and I would like to thank the author for sending me the book from a giveaway for an honest review. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 is because of the spelling mistakes and my thoughts about the ending. Otherwise it would have been a 5.

Continuing "Dept. of Reproductive Managment"

Started "Dept. of Reproductive Management"
Read the first 50 pages of Kelly A. Wilson's Dept. of Reproductive Management. It was a very intense first 50 pages. We learn a lot about the world that Maggie, an illegally born child who is now 16, and what happens to children who are illegally born. But Maggie is unique, she was brought to the governments "orphanage" like place that they keep these children when she was only a baby. Babies never go to the center; they usually arrive as small children about 4 years old or so. The idea is strange and yet believable in this odd dystopian world.
The government decided that they needed to regulate who could and could not have children because so many children were being neglected by parents. So now those who want to be parents need to go through a process to see if they can be accepted. And those who have children without clearance have their child taken away and sent to these government centers to raise them and either ready them for adulthood or train them to be enforcers of the DRM (Dept. of Reproductive Management.) I really like the concept of this book so far and I hope it continues to intrigue me as I continue, but I probably won't get much reading done this weekend. Happy reading everyone :)

"Chase the Dark" by Annette Marie, my final thoughts
Finished Chase the Dark by Annette Marie and it was an interesting ending, I'll say the least. Not what I expected, but it's a decent set up for the second book which I hope to get sometime soon. But I do have a bunch of books I still need to get to. But anyways, I'll start off by saying I just love the cover. The colors and the whispyness of the design makes it look mysterious and entices curiosity. The cover is what drew me to the book in the first place. I just wanted to say that I loved the cover.
Now to the actual story. I know I kind of said a summary earlier but I'll write another one since this is my final review. This story is written in third person following a girl named Piper. But even though it's in third person, we occasionally get internal thoughts of Piper, which I thought was a little strange at first, but it kind of worked, and it wasn't too often so it wasn't distracting. But after the first 2 times I started to pick up on it a little more. But it did not hinder my reading experience. Ok, sorry I got off track. Now, Piper ends up becoming a fugitive with two men, Ash and Lyre. Ash is a daemon who is feared by like everyone and Lyre is an incubus who tries to seduce Piper even though he knows she'll reject him. It's in his nature even though he's only teasing her most of the time. But while they are trying to clear their names and no longer be fugitives, Piper becomes conflicted about her feelings towards Ash. Ash ends up saving her life several times and she can't understand why but she's thankful that he has but she also knows that she cannot trust him and that he is very dangerous. I'm pretty sure some of this will be explained more in the second book even though as the reader I can see that Ash has feelings for her but she just can't see it right now. At least that is what I'm guessing, I could be wrong.
The world building was great, but I loved her characters even better. The author did a wonderful job describing the characters and making them all unique and believable. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to get the next book, and the third book comes out in March which is exciting. I'm going to rate this book 4.5/5 on goodreads.com. I hope you pick this book up if you are thinking about it. It's a great fast read.

The next book I am going to be reading is Dept. of Reproductive Management by Kelly A. Wilson. I won this book in a goodreads.com giveaway a few weeks ago and I'm just now getting to it. Oh, and just a heads up, I am having a friend visiting this weekend so I probably won't get much reading done. So I probably won't be posting much until Monday perhaps. Happy reading everyone :)

Read 2 Chapters

But these two chapters I read were also an insight into Ash slightly as well. He really cares about Piper, but it's difficult to figure out why, which is Piper's problem as well. I'm curious to see where this began and where it will go. But the fight scene with the two of them was a pretty big deal for Ash I think. I can't wait to find out more about this guy. But I definitely foresee Piper and Ash getting together. But these chapters were big, and I liked them. I stopped where they lost the ring that her father left her and is the whole reason they are fugitives in the first place. Now they have to try and get it back and continue to clear their name. Happy reading everyone :)
